The Injured Runner

Whether you are a recreational runner or a competitive runner, chances are you have experienced a running-related injury. Getting back out onto the roads/trails after an injury is not always a smooth and easy process. Sometimes, the injury tends to linger, even once you feel like you’re ready to return to running. Having the guidance of a physical therapist during your rehabilitation program will help you get back to running faster, and safely.

How Your Physical Therapist Can Help

Runners are a stubborn population when it comes to injury. I can say this because I am a runner too. We tend to try to run through pain and hope that things will just work themselves out. Sometimes, that is the case. It’s great when you are able to continue training through an injury and the injury spontaneously reduces. However, that is not always the case. There are certain times when seeking treatment from a qualified medical professional is important.

When dealing with a running-related injury, the sooner you get in to see your physical therapist, the better. If you’re getting even the slightest bit of foot pain, knee pain, hip pain, or low back pain when running, it is important to see a specialist early to prevent the condition from worsening. Your physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation of your biomechanics and determine what is causing your pain. Your therapist will work with you on several aspects of your sport including, your running form, strengthening specific muscles, altering your cadence, and perhaps even suggesting a different type of running shoes based on your foot type. The most important thing when returning to running after an injury is developing a safe “return to running program.” This is where it is important to have the oversight of a physical therapist who is skilled in working with runners.

My Experience With Runners

I work with a lot of runners in my community. I am a recreational runner myself and understand that running is not simply an activity, it is a sport. Just like any sport, form is important. Proper training is even more important. I have seen many runners with injuries that could have easily been prevented by implanting a better running training program. If you are a runner dealing with an injury, I encourage you to see a local physical therapist who understands the biomechanics of running, how to set up a proper training program, and understands how to assess and treat running-related injuries. I am happy to work with you and help you get back out on the pavement or trails!

If you want to recovery faster, build more muscle, increase endurance, increase your VO2 max, ask us about how Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Training can help you!
