Back Pain When Squatting? It Could Be From Your Shoulders!

If you experience any low back pain when squatting, be sure to try this quick assessment to determine if you’re compensating in your lumbar spine for a lack of shoulder mobility.
The back squat requires a lot of shoulder external rotation range of motion. A lack of shoulder external rotation range of motion can lead to compensatory actions at the lumbar spine during the back squat. In order to get your arms behind the bar, you may be extending (arching) your lower back more than you should be during squatting. Keeping a neutral spine during the squat is extremely important.
Do you fall into the category of someone who gets low back pain? Did you also try this and find that you are lacking shoulder external rotation on one side or both? Feel free to come into PhysioStrength for a consultation and find out how we can help you!
Keep in mind, there are many reasons why you could be experiencing back pain when squatting. It is always best to get a full evaluation by your physical therapist before trying any treatment interventions.
